A. Hospital Administration Initiatives:

1. GME Finance Planning: Serve on the GME Workforce and
Finance Committee. Instrumental in developing a novel
structured financial model for all 50 residency programs
Chandrakanth Are MD, MBA 35
with nearly 475 residents consisting of a budget of
approximately $53 million.
2. Nebraska Health Network (NHN): Serve on the Medical
Management Executive Committee (MMEC) of NHN. The NHN is
considered one of the early Accountable Care Organizations
(ACOs) that was formed in 2010 in response to the changes
emanating from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care
Act. The NHN consists of two organizations, Nebraska
Medicine and Methodist Health system located in Omaha, NE,
and serves more than 17,000 employees and 2/3rds of the
state's population of 1.8 million.
The MMEC helps NHN leadership realize the goals of
delivering high-value care based on evidence and adapt to
the evolving health care landscape.
3. Nebraska Health Network (NHN): Co-Chair GI Working Group
Involved in developing guidelines to provide evidence based
and high value/quality care in various clinical pathways in
gastroenterology.
4. Nebraska Health Network (NHN): Co-Chair ED Working Group
Involved in developing guidelines to provide evidence based
and high value/quality care in various clinical pathways in
emergency medicine.
5. Nebraska Health Network (NHN): Education Committee
Involved in developing educational modules for all
physicians within the ACO.
6. Nebraska Health Network (NHN): Research Guidance Group
Involved in initiating and developing research projects to
assess the effectiveness of practices developed by the ACO.
7. Nebraska Medicine Consulting Position: Consultant for:
1) Supply Chain Performance Improvement Project; 2)
Strategic Assessment of Global Health Strategies for
Clinical Programs with International Patient Opportunities;
and, 3) Development of Strategic Planning Process for the
Clinical Enterprise.
Chandrakanth Are MD, MBA 36
8. Financial formula for distribution of Core faculty
support-Department of Surgery:
Developed a unique formula
to fairly distribute allocated funds for core faculty
activities in the Next Accreditation System (NAS) of
Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
9. Night float: CONCEIVED and DEVELOPED (In anticipation of
the new duty hour rules, 2011) the night-float system for
the Department of Surgery. LEAD meetings with the
chairman/leadership of the Department of Surgery,
residents, nursing leadership, and directors. The night-
float system was started as a pilot in May 2011, and put in
place July 2011. The system has been very successful and
has received positive feedback from all the nursing
directors and staff.
10. PM rounds: INITIATED and DEVELOPED a novel PM rounds
system with the nursing directors. COORDINATED activities
between the night-float resident and the nursing leads from
all wards at a fixed time every night. The night-float
resident and nursing leads from all wards go over all the
patients in a proactive fashion between 7-9 pm, even if
there are no active issues. This has improved communication
between the residents and nurses, promoting better and
safer patient care and reduces the number of pages. This
activity has been received very well by the nursing
directors and staff and we are now assessing how to export
this to other services. The nursing director and I join the
resident on PM rounds to assess and support this successful
activity.

B. Global/International Health Initiatives:

1. MOU between UNMC and India: LEAD and SIGNED a unique
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between UNMC and the
Directorate of Medical Education (DME) in Andhra Pradesh,
India, 2009. The DME in Andhra Pradesh oversees the
education of medical students in over 34 medical schools
that serve the state of nearly 90 million people. This
unique and one of its kind MOU between any university in
the United States and any state in Andhra Pradesh opens the
channels for many collabortive activities in clinical,
research, and educational avenues. Since January 2010,
almost 300 candiates from various medical schools in Andhra
Chandrakanth Are MD, MBA 37
Pradesh have visited UNMC, and plans are on board to pursue
clinical collaborations.
2. International Surgery Fellowship: INITIATED and
DEVELOPED a novel international surgery fellowship for the
general surgery residency program at UNMC.
3. Liason between the Society of Surgical Oncology in the
USA and the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology in
India:
INITIATED and PROMOTED collaborative activites
between the two largest organizations of surgical
oncologists in their respective countries. LEAD the
collaborative activities between the two organzations and
their leadership. LIAISED the collaborative activities
during the respective annual meetings in 2009 Kolkata,
India; 2010 Mumbai, India, and Phoenix, AZ; 2011 LuckNow,
India and San Antonio, TX; 2012 Goa, India and Orlando, FL;
2013 Delhi, India; and, 2014 Chennai, India and Phoenix,
AZ. Activities included collaborating reciprocol visits
the USA and India.
4. Assessment of educational gaps and needs for Oncology
professionals in India
: INITIATED and LEAD research and
obtained grants up to $250,000 for assessing educational
gaps and needs for oncology professionals in India. This
included surveys done for the first time at the annual
meetings of the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology.
These findings will be useful in improving oncology
education in a country like India that represents the
developing world with a rising cancer burden.

C. Leadership Courses:

1. Leadership course-2 credit hours during Executive MBA
from University of Nebraska, Omaha, NE, 2012
2. Leadership elective-2 credit hours during Executive MBA
from University of Nebraska, Omaha, NE, 2013. Course

Teaching Portfolio for complete initiatives)

1. MD/MBA joint curriculum: INITIATED and DIRECTED the
joint MD/MBA curriculum for the first time for UNMC medical
students. This joint curriculum is undertaken at UNMC and
the University of Nebraska Omaha. Met with the deans of
UNMC and the University of Nebraska. Following this, the
proposal was presented at UNMC's Curriculum Committee and
approved in 2009/2010.

2. Rural rotation for general surgery residents
: INITIATED
and DEVELOPED a rural surgery rotation for the first time
for the general surgery residency program in UNMC. This
rotation will be undertaken at North Platte, NE, and will
start in July 2012.
3. Simulation: INITIATED and DIRECTED skills training
curriculum for general surgery residents. BECAME the
surgical director for simulation, and have increased the
number of simulation-based skills training sessions for the
general surgery residents. INITIATED and working on
obtaining accreditation of simulation center from the ACS.
4. Multi-national research: INITIATED, DIRECTED, and LEAD a
multi-national research project to analyze the perceptions
of final year medical students towards the field of general
surgery. The study involved 9 medical schools in 8
countries: USA, England, India, Kenya, Italy, Croatia, and
China. The findings of this study can have implications for
the future general surgery workforce and has been published
in the Annals of Surgery.
