Betweenhumans, this virus spreads mostly via aerosols excreted from the respiratory system. Currentmeans of prevention of influenza virus infection are not entirely satisfactory because of their limitedefficacy. Safe and effective preventive measures against pandemic influenza are greatly needed.We demonstrate that infection of mice induced by aerosols of influenza A virus was preventedby chlorine dioxide (ClO2) gas at an extremely low concentration (below the long-term permissibleexposure level to humans, namely 0.1 p.p.m.). Mice in semi-closed cages were exposed toaerosols of influenza A virus (1 LD50) and ClO2 gas (0.03 p.p.m.) simultaneously for 15 min.Three days after exposure, pulmonary virus titre (TCID50) was 102.6±1.5 in five mice treated withClO2, whilst it was 106.7±0.2 in five mice that had not been treated (P50.003). Cumulativemortality after 16 days was 0/10 mice treated with ClO2 and 7/10 mice that had not been treated(P50.002). In in vitro experiments, ClO2 denatured viral envelope proteins (haemagglutinin andneuraminidase) that are indispensable for infectivity of the virus, and abolished infectivity.Taken together, we conclude that ClO2 gas is effective at preventing aerosol-induced influenzavirus infection in mice by denaturing viral envelope proteins at a concentration well below the

During my tenure in this esteemed position I have had the opportunity to discuss ideas and work with colleagues from many research and practice specialties; to work with other research mentors in supervising students; to interface with members of professional organisations; as well as having the great satisfaction of advising PhD students. Four of the PhD students under my direct supervision have completed their studies and successfully defended their thesis within the last 14 months; 3 students are still in progress – all are making a contribution to the evidence that underpins the practice of the midwifery profession.

The summer generation of mites appears to be characterized by the largestmorphological variability whereas the winter one has stable characters. We failed to evolve the complexof morphological characters that would allow us to identify, with high level of reliability, certainphenotype of the mite. Significant stability of morphological characters of V. destructor in the course oftime was determined. The mean values of the length and width of the body allow to consider theUkrainian population of Varroa mite, which parasitize the honey bee Apis mellifera Linnaeus, as theKorean haplotype of Varroa destructor Anderson et Trueman, 2000.
